Program Notes
Companion Pieces was commissioned by the Maribo Trio to depict the unique personalities of their beloved canine companions - Mabel, Rita, and Bowie - who also inspire the group’s name.
The work unfolds in three movements, with each exploring a different emotional aspect of life with a loyal, furry friend. Themes of longing, nostalgia, and euphoria are woven throughout, capturing the profound enrichment four-legged companions bring to their human counterparts.
There are various unifying elements throughout the piece, such as an underlying harmonic framework, melodic fragments, and a “tremolo” motif (which I like to think of as a musical depiction of a dog tail wagging). The majority of this material uses only 6 pitches as a reflection of the number of letters in the trio’s name (M-A-R-I-B-O).
